From Eyesore to Masterpiece: The 32ft Lake Mazinaw Canoe Rack

If you have ever spent a summer on the shores of Lake Mazinaw, you know that the view is the main attraction. Between the towering cliffs of Bon Echo and the deep, clear water, there is a certain magic to the area that draws people in year after year. But for many cottage owners, there is a secondary reality to lakeside living: the gear. Specifically, the pile of canoes, kayaks, paddles, and life jackets that inevitably ends up cluttering the shoreline or tucked awkwardly under a deck.

Back in June 2021, we had the opportunity to tackle this exact problem for a beautiful cottage rental called Green Gateway to the Maz. The owners had a vision to elevate their guest experience, but they were staring at a literal eyesore: a messy, dark area at the bottom of their deck that served as a catch-all for watercraft.

What they needed wasn’t just a shed or a plastic rack; they needed a structural masterpiece that matched the natural beauty of the lake. We stepped in to design and build a 32ft custom timber frame canoe and kayak stand that didn't just hide the mess: it became a focal point of the property.

Custom-crafted raised timber frame deck structure

If you look closely at the raised deck structure above, you’ll spot the same kind of intentional detailing we aim for across the whole build: cross-braced supports for stiffness and long-term stability, plus clean metal balusters that keep the lines crisp without visually “heavying up” the space.

The Challenge: Turning Wasted Space into Functional Art

When you run a high-end cottage rental, every square inch of the property contributes to the guest's first impression. Underneath a raised deck is often "dead space." It’s usually damp, dark, and filled with a tangled heap of boats. For Green Gateway to the Maz, this area was visible to everyone arriving at the waterfront.

The goal was to create a storage solution that could hold more than six canoes and kayaks while also providing dedicated spots for paddles and smaller water toys. However, because KXO Timber Frame specializes in traditional craftsmanship, we weren't going to just slap some pressure-treated 2x4s together. We wanted to build something that would last for generations and showcase the soul of timber framing.

Traditional Craftsmanship: The Mortise and Tenon Advantage

When you look at a piece of our work, you’re looking at more than just wood. You’re looking at a centuries-old language of joinery. For this 32ft rack, we utilized handcrafted mortise and tenon joinery.

Our signature handcrafted joinery: mortise and tenon connections secured with hardwood pegs, designed to tighten over time and last for generations.

If you aren't familiar with the term, a mortise is a hole or slot cut into a piece of wood, and a tenon is a tongue at the end of another piece, shaped to fit perfectly into that hole. When these two pieces are brought together, they create a joint that is significantly stronger than anything held together by modern screws or nails.

To secure these joints, we used oak pegs. In traditional timber framing, these pegs are driven through the joint, drawing the two pieces of wood tighter over time. Unlike metal fasteners that can rust or cause the wood to rot from the inside out due to condensation, oak pegs move and breathe with the structure. On the shores of Lake Mazinaw, where the humidity can swing wildly between a humid July afternoon and a frozen February night, this durability is essential.

Aesthetic Contrast: Pecan Pine Meets Ebony Backers

Aesthetics played a huge role in this transformation. We wanted the rack to feel modern yet rustic, fitting in with the "Green Gateway" vibe. To achieve this, we chose a two-tone color palette that highlighted the different layers of the structure.

The main timbers are pine, finished in a warm, rich pecan color. This stain brings out the natural grain of the wood and gives the structure an inviting, organic glow. However, to really make those timbers pop, we installed rich ebony backer boards behind the rack.

This contrast serves a dual purpose:

  1. Visual Depth: The dark ebony creates a shadow-box effect, making the pecan-colored timbers stand out as the primary architectural feature.

  2. Clean Lines: The backer boards hide the "busy" underside of the existing deck, providing a clean, uniform backdrop that makes the entire area look intentional and polished.

More Than Just a Boat Rack: Dedicated Storage

One of the biggest frustrations for paddlers is finding the right gear. There is nothing worse than grabbing a kayak and then spending ten minutes hunting for a matching paddle or a dry life jacket.

For this project, we didn't just build "shelves." We designed specific areas for all the water toys. We integrated a dedicated paddle rack where oars can be stored vertically and neatly. By creating a specific home for every item, we helped the owners of Green Gateway to the Maz ensure their property stays organized even during the busiest rental weeks. You can see more examples of how we integrate functionality into our builds on our projects page.

The Long-Term Value of Quality Construction

Since this project was completed in June 2021, it has seen several harsh Ontario winters and heavy-use summers. Because we used high-quality timbers and traditional joinery, the rack hasn't sagged, shifted, or lost its structural integrity.

When you invest in timber framing for your cottage, you aren't just buying a temporary fix. You are adding real property value. Guests at a rental property notice the difference between a "DIY" project and a professionally crafted timber structure. It signals a level of care and luxury that sets a property apart from the competition.

Why Lake Mazinaw Was the Perfect Backdrop

Building on Lake Mazinaw comes with its own set of inspirations. The lake is deep, the rocks are rugged, and the history is rich. It felt only right to use building methods that have stood the test of time. Timber framing is a nod to the past, but with our modern finishes and design tweaks, it feels perfectly at home in a contemporary cottage setting.

Whether you are looking to fix an unsightly area under your own deck or you want to create a grand entrance for your property, the principles we used on the Lake Mazinaw rack apply to almost any project. It’s about looking at a problem: like boat clutter: and seeing an opportunity for architectural beauty.
